La Estudiantina Capulena Get link Facebook X Pinterest Email Other Apps June 18, 2008 This, fellow Capulenos is something we should be truly proud of. The dance we have always claimed to be our very own, was featured in a Dance Symposium, and is now being shown in youtube. The caption reads: “This is one of the three available versions of Philippine Estudiantina dances, popular in its broken Spanish name, "Estudiantina de Capuleño". The proper term should have been "La Estudiantina Capuleña". This dance is simply called Estudiantina in the other towns in Samar where it is also popular. The dance could have derived its name from "estudiantina" which is the all-string band that plays the dance music in the many 'baylihan' during the Spanish colonial period. The estudiantina is more popular as the 'rondalla'. It is also called 'tuna' and 'murga'. In fact, in the present day Spanish world, the term used is either tuna or estudiantina. This dance is usually performed during occasions like baptismal and birthday parties, weddings and even town fiesta. It is very popular in the town of Capul as well as in the nearby towns of Allen, Lavezares and Victoria in Northern Samar.A notation of this dance's music and the literature is found in the book VISAYAN FOLK DANCES volume 2 by Liberatd Fajardo.”I still have to find the details on where this specifically happened and who the dancers were. In the meantime, just enjoy the clip. Get link Facebook X Pinterest Email Other Apps Comments

This group won Best in Costume and Best in Performance Showcase for the barangay-based competition. Read more
Editorial: A Future For Sale May 24, 2010 Note: This post is the Administrator's take on how the recent elections went. Fair comments are welcome. From how I saw it, it was indeed an impressive election. It definitely was more peaceful than the most recent ones. Automation made the process exciting (or worrisome) but at the same time challenging. Truly, it was heartwarming to see people brave the punishing summer heat and the tiring wait just to be able to cast their votes. There is no doubt in my mind that the results reflected the Abaknons’ true democratic will. However, why they voted for whom is an entirely different issue. I wish to think that in the final analysis, they did vote with the thought of what’s best for Capul. But even with that, any voter who receives money during election time still compromises his vote. While I do not wish to rob the winners of the glory of their victory, I bet that the aftertaste of their win would have been much sweeter if they (again, i mean ALL of them) did not gi... Read more
